Our Impressions

Darsie's masterpiece!

Katy's masterpiece!

This month, we are studying the artwork of Claude Monet. Yesterday was our second class about him but only our first actually creating art. We talked about how to paint like an impressionist (a little more difficult when we were using watercolors instead of oils) and then looked at one of his paintings of his Japanese bridge and attempted to copy his style. It was interesting to notice that our two younger ones who were more impatient to be done were much quicker to pick up the "dotted" style we were encouraging them to use, while the older girls, who are much more into detail work, really had a hard time not painting like usual. In the end, we had four beautiful Japanese bridges. Next week, we'll try some garden painting, since Monet liked to paint outside!

  1. i am impressed with katy's detail! their styles certainly come out. i love at the art museum there is a painting by a guy who fixed an earlier painting he had done, but had since transitioned into the impressionist "dot" format, and you can really tell. i was fascinated by it!

  2. fun! do you come up with the art lessons yourself, or do you & a friend do it, or do you have a book that you use as a guideline?

  3. Hey Christina, I pick the artist for the month and then look online for suggestion that might be age-appropriate. We're doing a "Charlotte Mason" approach to this part of school and studying one artist per month, looking at the artwork, discussing it and then trying to imitate it a bit. I was really excited when, last fall, a friend of mine brought a bag to church with a Renoir (I think) painting on it, and Katy excitedly pointed it out to me and told me that it was a Renoir! I definitely think teaching is for the adults - the kids will have to grow up and do it to really enjoy it so much as I am ! :)
